Euro Beard Cup: The Results
We asked you to vote for the Euro 2012 side with the finest beardsmanship – and the results are in. Here’s how the biggest beard contest in history just shook down.
A month ago, we asked you to vote for the best beards ever seen in this year’s Euro 2012 national sides. We trawled the archives to uncover styles that make European footballers the best in the world, and as the Euro 2012 competition continued you voted for the best.
Now the final whistle has blown – and the Spanish side, dubbed “the best team of all time” by British legend Gary Lineker – have taken the trophy in a historic 4-0 match against Italy. But who’s won the beards?
Poland take the cup
Poland came out as winners in our battle of the footballing beards, with an incredible 2784 votes, over twice the number as the second placing, Spain. So even though the Spanish side came through comfortably on the pitch, support for the beards of the host nation was running high.
It was very much a game of two teams, too, with Poland and Spain finishing way ahead of their Euro competitors. Ukraine, the other host country, finished last, which goes to show that home teams don’t always get the advantage!
Poland’s Marcin Wasilewski voted most stylish bearded player
So, a nail-biting final between the Spanish and Polish sides – but in terms of individual players, the most stylish beard was voted to be Poland’s Marcin Wasilewski, whose dirty shave was a style that featured heavily on nearly every team.
Goatee style voted most popular for Euro players
Our leader board of players with the best beards shows one style as more popular than any other: the goatee. This classic beard style features on three of the top six players, holding its own even against the dirty shave favoured by the winning player Wasilewski.
