Get ready for Movember with Shave Your Style's guide to growing and styling the most iconic mustaches of all time
Retire your razor and ready yourself for Movember! Join thousands of men across the world as they don mustaches in an effort to raise funds for prostate cancer awareness.
Since I know many - including you, right? - will be joining in the fight, here are a few tips and tricks to help you get the best looking mustache in your group!
The first step is to find a way to take advantage of as much facial hair as possible in order to get the style you want. The easiest way is to start by growing a full beard and mustache. This way you will get an idea of what you’ve got to work with. The next step is to pick a style that you like!
Brad Pitt: The Natural
The most common of all mustaches, this can be grown effortlessly and shaped without much technical focus. Start by cleanly shaving the cheeks, chin and neck. The mustache hair should not extend more than ? inch past the sides of the mouth. Use trimmers to trim the hairs just above the top lip.
Tom Selleck: the Chevron
This Magnum mustache could take a little over a month to grow, so if this is the style you’re looking for you should start growing it right now. But if you have a fair amount of facial hair at this point, here’s what you do!
Start by cleanly shaving the cheeks, chin and neck. The mustache hair should not extend more than half an inch past the sides of the mouth. Shape (with a razor or trimmers) the very top of the mustache into a subtle, inverted V-shape. Next, use trimming shears or scissors to clip the bottom hairs so that they hang just over the top of the upper lip.
Clark Gable: The Pencil
If worn the right way this mustache will command a sense of sophisticated style.
Start by cleanly shaving the cheeks, chin and neck. The mustache hair should not extend more than half an inch past the sides of the mouth. With the use of a razor, cleanly shave directly below the nose, leaving a flat, thin line of hair approximately quarter of an inch in height just above the upper lip.
Rollie Fingers: The Handlebar
The trademark look of Oakland Athletics legend Rollie Fingers, the handlebar is perhaps the ultimate in old school style.
Start by cleanly shaving the cheeks, chin and neck. The hair on your upper lip should remain unclipped and full. Moisten the mustache with a little water, and use a mustache comb to part the mustache down the middle. Brush the hair from the center out towards the sides, and then in a swooping motion downward towards the chin.
Next take a small amount of mustache wax and work it into the mustache, beginning in the middle and working outward. As you reach the tips, curl them upward. Wait three or four minutes for the wax to firm then use your fingers to curl the mustache tips upward towards the nose.
Friedrich Nietzsche: The Walrus
For big thinkers only, here’s how to style the Walrus.
Start by cleanly shaving the cheeks, chin and neck. The remaining hair on the upper lip should extend at the most half an inch past the sides of the mouth. Combing or brushing the hair downwards will ensure proper appearance, while the use of trimming shears or scissors will keep the wild hairs at bay. Also combing in a small amount of mustache wax into the mustache is a great way to keep it looking neat.
Hulk Hogan: The Horseshoe
The Horseshoe is big on statement, and that’s why it’s been the trademark look of Hulk Hogan and legions of Hulkamaniacs everywhere since the ‘80s.
The best way to achieve this look is to trim your natural beard and mustache with trimmers to a length of a quarter to half an inch. Next, use a razor to cleanly shave the chin without going beyond the width of the mouth. Continue shaving the cheeks and neck leaving a band of hair approximately half an inch wide on each side of the mouth that extends from the tips of the mustache to the base of the chin.
Now you just need your Harley Davidson and leathers – or at least a healthy sense of irony.
