Blades of Glory: Houston
In the “Lone Star State”, Shave Your Style has discovered some five-star barbershops in the city of Houston.
They say “Everything’s bigger in Texas” and that’s true of the barbershop culture too. Known for oil, Tex-Mex cuisine, and football – what may not be associated with Texas is that it hosts the biggest concentration of barbershops. But locals in Houston are well aware of their presence as each year the barbering industry rakes in a fortune. So we’ve decided to help you sift through the endless list of barbers and showcase a few of the coolest ones on our list.
Bad Boyz for life!
Bad Boyz Barber Shop is big, fitting ten chairs in the place. So if you’re looking for a spot to get in and get out, you won’t need to wait for an available barber here. The hip-hop inspired shop is impressively sleek and clean, even for ten guys constantly cropping hair. Owner “White” Mike claims that this is the best barbershop in all of Houston and even if he didn’t own the joint, he’d still be working here.
Okay… So maybe Mike’s a bit biased, but with 12 years of cutting experience and 10 years of the barbershop being opened, we’d come here too. One reason is because Mike strives to find a diverse set of barbers to cater to his clients. It’s important to him that his customers are able to relate to their barbers and for the barbers to relate to the hair and styles of the patrons sitting in their chair. It’s because of this connection between patron and barber that makes Mike so successful, popular enough to cut hair for famous rappers and their posse. It’s because of this relationship why Mike thinks his clients are so loyal. They’ve become more than just customers but a part of the Bad Boyz family.

Doug's & Don's Barbershop: A throw back to the past
With the Houston skyline as its backdrop, Doug’s & Don’s Barber Shop is conveniently located around downtown. When asking head barber Sean Cameron to describe the neighborhood of the shop, he defines it as bohemian – with moms and pops stores and local restaurants littered around the block. There’s a big community feel he continues, especially since the actual shop has been here since 1929.
Enhancing the bohemian vibe in their place, there’s a very vintage décor to Doug’s & Don’s. The shop’s been there for so long, they have loads of hodgepodge materials to work with. Every wall is ornamented with picture frames, awards, and little knickknacks that add details to the environment you can find inside. Since Doug took over, he’s held onto the authentic environment of the shop. Maybe that’s why multiple generations of the community still get their hair cut here. Sean loves this aspect best, seeing his clients bring in their retiring fathers for a shave or kids for their first haircut. It’s evident that the community cherished this barbershop for the past 50 years and the way things are going, maybe for the next 50 years as well.

Come for a haircut, stay for the Joe Black experience
John Brown is the proud owner and head barber at Joe Black’s Barber Shop. He’s been cutting hair since 1993 but recently opened his first shop in Houston after dodging Katrina’s wrath in New Orleans. He’s the epitome of the American dream. He left NOLA with what he could carry and succeeded in Houston, accomplishing his goals to one day own a barbershop.
After escaping Hurricane Katrina, John is filled with humility, gratitude, and optimism. He knows the hardships of starting over, struggling to stay afloat in a new city. And it’s his experiences that have helped open John’s eyes to the struggle of the community he serves. When he came to Houston, it was this community that helped him pursue his dreams and now he’s paying it forward. He holds neighborhood back-to-school events, providing free haircuts and backpacks full of supplies for students returning to school. He speaks of this charity work with immense pride and you can tell that he’s discovered a newfound love in Houston.
So if you’re looking for a barbershop that not only talks about the community but also participates within it, then Joe Black Barber Shop is what you want. The barbers are experts in their field and truly care about providing quality cuts for their clients. And it’s this care that they invest in their clientele that makes the Joe Black experience all worth it.
